Joi Scientific: Hydrogen 2.0

We previously reported how the little known company, Joi Scientific, had announced an amazing breakthrough allowing for cheap on-demand hydrogen production. Today I received a press release from them titled “The wait for a low-cost, sustainable, clean energy solution is over!” They claim that until now, the production and use of hydrogen as a fuel has been neither practical nor very clean, and are now looking for well-resourced partners interested in either reselling, manufacture, or commercial use. They’ve also raised more than $5 million in the latest round of funding, primarily from their main investor, Dean S. Woodman, the father of the billionaire who invented the GoPro camera.

The company has developed technology that can turn sea water into hydrogen, using a technique that Joi Scientific CEO and founder Traver Kennedy describes as a process which “happens in nature.”They expect to install their technology in test projects for the 1st time this year. Additional information about Joi Scientific and it’s technology will be available later in 2016 but below is some interesting info I’ve gleaned so far.

Zero Emissions: The Hydrogen 2.0 extraction process generates hydrogen without the use of chemicals or electrolysis, and without any greenhouse gas emissions.

On-Demand: It enables the localized production of hydrogen on-site or on-board, where and when it is needed.

Cost Competitive: Hydrogen 2.0 can be produced in abundance on a cost-competitive basis to other energy alternatives.

    Figure 17 provides the order of magnitudes of what new nuclear technologies may bring to our spectrum of options for future energy sources. It includes LENR and another possibility reported under ‘in situ fuel production’ as follows:

    The high rates of hydrogen production as claimed by Solar Hydrogen Trends (SHT)47 were confirmed by third party measurements (209 kL/h for 415 Wh, that generating hydrogen at an equivalent of 626 kWh, or a COP of 1500). The size and weight of tested devices were small, similar to LENR ones. So both LENR and SHT devices are in the bubble labelled ‘New nuclear technologies’ in Figure 17.

    This is enough energy to power large aircraft such as a 747 or C17 when the technology becomes commercially viable. Another contender of high energy density source is the compact fusion reactor (CFR) by Lockheed Martin which targets prototypes in five years and commercialisation in ten years48.

    Solar Hydrogen Trends was already confirmed as a fraud a long time ago. They used significant amounts of aluminium as a consumable but never included it in their COP calculations.
